Introduction

The Business Cards with BOM (Bill of Materials) golden product provides a detailed, production-focused approach to pricing business cards in shopVOX Pro. Unlike standard grid-based business card products, this product calculates pricing using the individual components that make up the job, including click charges, paper stock, laminates, packaging, special colors, and other production costs.

This article is designed to supplement the video below, with terminology and steps aligned directly to the walkthrough demonstrated.

Steps

Step 1 – Locate the Business Cards with BOM Product
  1. Navigate to Settings > Products.
  2. Locate the Business Cards with BOM golden product.
  3. Open the product to review its configuration.

This product is designed to provide full visibility into the materials and production costs associated with manufacturing business cards.

Step 2 – Review the Click Charge Section
  1. Open the Configure Pricing tab.
  2. Locate the Click Charge section.

The Click Charge section is used to account for digital press click costs or meter rates.

You can:

  • Edit existing click charges.
  • Duplicate existing click charge options.
  • Create additional click charge variations.
  • Adjust pricing based on your equipment costs.

To make a click charge available on the quote interface, ensure its corresponding checkbox is enabled.

Step 3 – Configure Business Card Paper Stocks
  1. Locate the Paper Stock section.
  2. Review the available card stock options.

The product includes standard business card stocks by default.

If you need additional stocks:

  1. Duplicate an existing stock option.
  2. Rename it appropriately.
  3. Ensure the correct parent sheet size is selected.

For example:

  • If the stock is purchased on an 11" × 17" sheet, use an existing 11" × 17" entry as the base template.

Proper sheet sizing is critical because the product uses sheet calculations to determine production efficiency and material usage.

Step 4 – Configure Lamination Options
  1. Locate the Laminating section.
  2. Review the available laminate options.

Examples may include:

  • Matte Laminate
  • Gloss Laminate
  • Specialty Laminates

You can:

  • Edit pricing for existing laminates.
  • Add additional laminate types.
  • Create custom finishing options for specific products.

Customers are not required to select a laminate, making this an optional enhancement during the quoting process.

Step 5 – Review Default Items
  1. Scroll to the Default Items section.
  2. Review the production costs attached to the product.

Default Items are used for charges that are automatically included or linked to interface controls.

Examples include:

  • Packaging Costs
  • Additional Costs
  • Special Color Charges
  • Rush Charges

These items connect directly to fields and checkboxes within the quote interface.

Step 6 – Adjust Pricing and Markups
  1. Open any Default Item by clicking the blue pencil edit icon.
  2. Review the associated cost and selling price.

Some default items use a 1:1 Cost-to-Price Ratio.

Example:

  • Cost = $1.00
  • Price = $1.00

If desired, you can add markup by increasing the selling price while keeping the production cost unchanged.

This allows you to maintain profitability on ancillary services and special requests.

Step 7 – Review the Quoting Interface
  1. Select the Check Pricing tab.
  2. Review the quote interface.

The product includes several preconfigured values:

  • Business Card Size
  • Quantity Set
  • Bleed Percentage

Common set quantities: e.g. 500, 1000, 2500

Users can modify these values depending on customer requirements.

Step 8 – Configure Additional Production Controls

Within the quote interface, review the available production options:

Bleed Percentage

Used to provide additional printed area for trimming accuracy and production efficiency.

Additional Cost

Allows extra charges to be added to the project.

Packaging Cost

Allows custom packaging costs to be included.

Special Options

Checkboxes allow estimators to activate additional production services and charges.

These controls make it possible to build highly customized business card estimates directly from the quote screen.

Step 9 – Select Production Components

During quoting:

  1. Choose the appropriate Click Charge.
  2. Select the required Paper Stock.
  3. Optionally select a Laminate.
  4. Enter any special instructions.

Examples of instructions may include:

  • Employee Names
  • Contact Information
  • Design Notes
  • Production Requirements

These details can be entered directly into the instructions field for reference throughout production.

Step 10 – Review the Price Breakdown
  1. Complete the quote selections.
  2. Open the Price Breakdown section.

The breakdown displays all pricing components contributing to the final price.

Examples include:

  • Paper Stock
  • Click Charges
  • Laminates
  • Packaging Costs
  • Additional Production Charges

This transparency makes it easier to validate pricing and understand cost drivers.

Step 11 – Use the Rotate 90 Option
  1. Locate the Rotate 90 checkbox.
  2. Enable the option.

The Rotate 90 feature rotates the artwork orientation by 90 degrees to determine whether the job fits more efficiently on the parent sheet.

Example:

  • Standard Layout = 8 Sheets Required
  • Rotated Layout = 7 Sheets Required

Because fewer sheets are required, overall material costs decrease and profitability improves.

Review the updated pricing and sheet counts after enabling this option.

Notes & Tips

🔹 Tip: Duplicate existing paper stock records when creating new stock options to preserve sizing logic and calculation settings.

🔹 Tip: Use the Price Breakdown regularly to verify that all production costs are being captured correctly.

🔹 Tip: Rotate 90 can significantly reduce material consumption on certain card layouts.

⚠️ Warning: Selecting the wrong parent sheet size may cause incorrect sheet calculations and inaccurate pricing.
