Calendar Wall with BOM Golden Product

Aaron Aldrich Updated by Aaron Aldrich

Introduction

The Calendar Wall with BOM product is a specialized estimating tool that uses a Bill of Materials (BOM) to automatically calculate paper usage, click charges, finishing costs, machine time, and pricing for wall calendars. Proper setup ensures accurate estimates while reducing manual calculations and production errors. This article is designed to supplement the video below, with terminology and steps aligned directly to the walkthrough demonstrated.

Steps

Step 1 – Open the Calendar Wall with BOM Product
  1. Navigate to Settings → Products.
  2. Locate and open Calendar Wall with BOM.
  3. Review the product setup sections organized into configuration steps.
Step 2 – Configure Click Charges
  1. Locate the Click Charges section.
  2. Review the preconfigured click charge options.
  3. Click the Pencil Edit icon to modify existing click charges.
  4. Use the Copy option to create additional click charge variations.
  5. Update pricing to match your equipment's actual click or meter rates.

Examples may include:

  • Color One Side
  • Black & White One Side
  • Click Charge Color
  • Click Charge Black & White
Step 3 – Configure Inside Paper Stock Options
  1. Navigate to the Inside Paper Stock section.
  2. Review the available paper options.
  3. Edit existing paper stocks or create copies as needed.
  4. Ensure the copied paper stock matches the actual paper size being used.

For example:

  • If using a 12" × 18" sheet, copy an existing 12" × 18" stock.
  • Avoid copying different-sized paper stocks, as BOM calculations rely on the sheet dimensions.
Step 4 – Configure Cover Paper Stocks
  1. Locate the Outside Cover section.
  2. Review available cover stock options.
  3. Edit or create additional cover stocks as needed.
  4. Verify that the cover stock size accurately reflects the material being used.

The cover stock is calculated separately from the inside pages.

Step 5 – Configure Binding Types
  1. Navigate to the Binding Type section.
  2. Review the available binding methods.
  3. Add or edit binding types as required.
  4. Save any updates.

Common examples include:

  • Coil Binding
  • Glue Binding
  • Stapling
  • Other finishing methods
Step 6 – Update Default Charges
  1. Locate the Default Charges section.
  2. Review the pricing values tied to the calculator interface.
  3. Adjust charge amounts to match your shop's production costs.
  4. Save your updates.

These background charges are automatically used when estimate calculations are performed.

Step 7 – Test Pricing with Check Pricing
  1. Click Check Pricing.
  2. Use the pricing simulator to test configurations without creating a quote or transaction.
  3. Enter sample production values to validate calculations.

This tool allows you to confirm pricing behavior before releasing the product to Users.

  1. Enter the finished Width and Height of the calendar.
  2. Specify the Number of Pages.
  3. Enter an Overs Percentage.

Overs account for:

  • Press setup
  • Color calibration
  • Alignment testing
  • Production spoilage
  1. Add any:
    • Packaging Costs
    • Additional Costs
    • Rush Charges
Step 9 – Select Production Materials and Finishing
  1. Select the appropriate Click Charge.
  2. Choose the Inside Paper Stock.
  3. Select the Outside Cover Paper Stock.
  4. Choose a Binding Type.
  5. Select optional finishing services such as:
    • Collating
    • Cutting
    • Folding
    • Stapling

These selections drive both material calculations and pricing.

Step 10 – Review the Pricing Breakdown
  1. Generate pricing using your selected options.
  2. Review the calculated selling price.
  3. Analyze the detailed pricing breakdown.

The breakdown may include:

  • Number of pages
  • Outside cover pages
  • Binding costs
  • Additional costs
  • Rush fees
  • Machine time calculations
  • Material usage calculations

Charges remain at $0.00 when the corresponding option has not been selected.

Step 11 – Optimize Material Usage with Rotate 90
  1. Locate the Rotate 90 option.
  2. Enable the setting.
  3. Compare material consumption before and after rotating the artwork.

This feature evaluates whether rotating the design produces a more efficient layout on the selected sheet size.

Example:

  • Standard orientation may require five sheets.
  • Rotated orientation may require only four sheets.

A more efficient layout can reduce material costs and improve profitability.

Step 12 – Verify the Finished Size Fits the Selected Paper
  1. Compare the calendar dimensions against the selected paper stock.
  2. Ensure the finished piece fits within the dimensions of the sheet.
  3. Adjust paper stock if the print exceeds the available sheet size.

Example:

  • A 9" × 12" calendar cannot be properly calculated using an 8.5" × 11" sheet stock.

When the finished product exceeds the selected paper size, BOM calculations will not calculate material usage correctly.

Will result in sheet selections not calculating.

Notes & Tips

🔹 Tip: Use Check Pricing whenever making product changes. This allows you to validate calculations without creating test transactions.

🔹 Tip: Copy existing paper stocks that match the desired sheet size instead of building new paper options from scratch.

🔹 Tip: Test the Rotate 90 option on frequently used calendar sizes to improve sheet utilization and reduce waste.

⚠️ Warning: Paper dimensions directly affect BOM calculations. Using an incorrect sheet size can produce inaccurate estimates.

⚠️ Warning: If the calendar's width or height exceeds the selected paper stock dimensions, the paper calculations will not function properly.

⚠️ Warning: Updating click charge rates impacts future estimates that use those pricing options. Verify pricing before saving changes.
